Finding exact matches, variants, and parallels

How to confirm the exact card when year, set, color, or serial number matters

Small details can change a card's identity and value. Two cards can look almost identical but be different variants or parallels.

Details that define an exact match

Check these fields before saving a card:

  • Player name
  • Year
  • Set name
  • Card number
  • Parallel or variant name
  • Autograph, relic, image variation, short print, or insert name
  • Serial numbering, such as /25, /75, /99, or /150
  • Grade and grading company, if slabbed

Parallels and colors

Parallels are alternate versions of the same card. They may have a different border color, foil color, pattern, print run, or serial number.

Examples:

  • Refractor
  • Purple Refractor
  • Gold Wave
  • Silver Prizm
  • Black Velocity
  • Orange Ice

If the card has a color or pattern, include that in your search or scan review. A Purple Refractor and a base Chrome card should be treated as different cards.

Serial numbers

Serial numbering is usually printed as 12/75 or 034/199. The second number is the total print run. If Cubbby shows a print run that does not appear on the card, compare active and sold comps and report the mismatch.

When you are unsure

Use the card image you uploaded, the printed card number, and the back of the card if available. The front image is great for visual matching, but the back often has the official card number and set details.
